Lab 2: Popular and Scientific Info
Resources where to search for popular articles interpreting scientific information
Biodiversity Science:
- Example key word search: Mangrove Destruction Honduras
- Popular article title: Mangroves may increase the abundance of coral-reef fish, according to a new study.
- Wording in this article that leads to think it has information interpreted from a scientific article: "Previous scientific studies have found that these trees are essential to reef health and coastal protection. In addition, mangroves are thought to act as nurseries for many species of tropical fish.
- Searched on Google Scholar: clicked on the advanced search: Key works: mangrove, coral reef health: found several articles and the scientific article that I connected to the other article was: Differences in coral-reef fish assemblages between mangrove-rick and mangrove-poor islands of Honduras
- Example key word search: Lake Enriquillo Dominican Republic
- Popular article title: Rising Tide Is a Mystery That Sinks Island Hopes
- Wording in this article that leads to think it has information interpreted from a scientific article: "There are no records, to the best of our knowledge, of such sudden growth of lakes of similar size, said Jorge E. Gonzales, a City College of New York engineering professor..."
- Searched on Google Scholar: clicked on the advanced search: Key works: lake enriquillo dominican republic: found several articles and the scientific article that I connected to the other article was: Physical and chemical properties of hypersaline Lago Enriquillo, Dominican Republic
- Example key word search: Scientific Discovery in Haiti
- Popular article title: The science behind the Haiti earthquake
- Wording in this article that leads to think it has information interpreted from a scientific article: "After being locked for over 250 years, tectonic plates along the Enriquillo Plantain Garden Fault finally slipped free."
- Searched on Google Scholar: clicked on the advanced search: Key works: haiti earthquake "enriquillo plantain Garden Fault": found several articles and the scientific article that I connected to the other article was: Complex rupture during the 12 January 2010 Haiti earthquake
